Metal coils after uncoiling need to be levelled before proceeding to further processing. This is done by passing the coil through the levelling mill. This process will induce plastic strain (permanent deformation) which enables flattening of the strip.

FEM can be used to simulate the process of leveling and finding the optimum parameters. The objective here is to obtain a leveled strip with least plastic strain. FE simulations were performed using MSC. Marc. employing a 2D plane strain model with elasto-plastic material model.
Modelling and simulation of the leveling process enabled the choice of optimum process parameters.
